Episode 3: “The spontaneous combustion has begun”
While Do Hee is in the middle of the road staring at the monitor, a man on a motorcycle throws acid at her, but out of nowhere, the demon jumps on her shielding her while holding her wrist. We can see the cross lighting up again and all the acid marks on his clothes vanish. Jeong Guwon insists that she should be more responsible and confesses he’s a demon. Later on at the police office, we understand that the liquid was indeed sulfuric acid, and it’s obvious they’re targeting her. At that moment, she remembers Cha Tae Jun’s phone call but doesn’t tell anyone, not even the police.
Then we move on to the never-ending Do Hee Guwon quick-witted banter. She calls him a Pokemon. He’s furious that she would let his cross burn. She compares him to a genie in a bottle. She doesn’t care whether he’s an angel or a demon but is amazed at his powers and the power the tattoo emits. “You need to be close to me, but you’re not my ex or a friend,” she blurts out. As they share the same fate she asks him to be her bodyguard though he refuses without even reflecting that he also needs to stay next to her because his powers come from the tattoo. On the other hand, she knows well that having a demon with superpowers by her side is her best choice given she’s being targeted by a killer. He cannot object to her arguments. Still, he doesn’t accept. He wants his peaceful life back while she threatens him to laser her cross.
Do Hee phones her Madame Ju and asks her about what is happening in her company. She didn’t know that the guy who died phoned her that day and decides to investigate the matter.
In the meantime, the demon’s finger catches fire, and he refers to this as internal combustion. He calls Do Hee immediately wanting to see her. to make a deal. He goes there carrying a bucket of ice as his finger is still burning. He accepts being her bodyguard, telling her that everyone deserves protection, even insects. He asks her to come with him and takes her near the clock on a tall building.
A 10-year-old girl who’s going to die is on the bed with her mother beside her. He offers his help so that the kid can stay healthy for the next 10 years. The woman offers to sign the deal, thinking hell is nothing compared to her kid’s suffering. He’s then back to his usual ritual of celebrating with a cake. She’s surprised at how he can still celebrate a deal which he was forced to do to stop himself from burning. But as he says, “Nothing’s free in this world.” She accuses him of exploiting people in desperation, but he sees it as saving people. From her perspective, the kid will not be happy if she knows what her mum has sacrificed. They have a heated discussion, and she doesn’t want his help anymore. She doesn’t want to exploit people with misfortunes. “You can afford to say that now,” he follows. But what about when her life is at risk?
The chairman seems to have found out the killer’s identity, but everything is vague now. Then we see the demon celebrating alone eating the cake. He’s happy he made a deal, and now his fingers are fine again. He’s also aware that the night when the cross was exchanged, there was a full moon. So he might have to wait another 28 days. Despite his moments of happiness or relief, he’s angry she fired him. He thinks that humans are too greedy. Her words on how humans can feel something called guilt seem to bother him. He goes to find the girl at the hospital, and he finds that the little girl’s real wish is not to spend her 17th birthday out of the hospital as her parents think, but that her parents won’t suffer because of her.
On the flip side, Do Hee sees the same kid from the hospital celebrating her birthday with her mum and dad, and the family seems happy. Her mum doesn’t seem concerned about what will happen in 10 years. Nevertheless, she’s hit by this experience. She opens the car door and finds the demon waiting for her with an umbrella. They stare at each other, and there’s a romantic OST in the background making us wonder if they’re falling for each other.
Back at her office, he is given several books for understanding security equipment and he asks for a weapon. Everyone thinks he’s way too handsome for the job and the guys at the office even gossip about being a bad lover in bed! However, Do Hee and Guwon now seem they have come to an understanding. She is curious how he ended up being a demon and whether he has been born one. He lived for 200 years as a demon. He was a human but he thinks he was of a different level but doesn’t remember it. He was chosen by God because he needed someone to work in hell.
Do Hee has been trying to phone Madam Ju but she’s not answering any calls. When she goes to look at her in her conservatory, she finds her probably dead. She asks Gowon to save her, but he cannot bring the dead alive.
We see a shot in the past where Do Hee is speaking with Madam Ju at her parent’s funeral. She says it’s her fault her parents died and she doesn’t deserve to cry. It’s because she told them to hurry up.
Later, we find Do Hee speaking about a photo with Seok Heon, the nephew of Madame Ju, and the Demon seems impressed. Everyone thinks Madame Ju had a heart attack. During different conversations with her relatives, we understand that Do-Hee hears for the first time about an audit team at the company. Also, seeing Do Hee and Seok Heon together, they were discussing how they come from different backgrounds even though they studied together. This funeral turns into a party, and she leaves.
The guy with blood on his neck appears again, wearing a security uniform and getting inside a CCTV control room. At the same time, Do Hee wanted to be alone in Madam Ju’s garden. Another nephew follows her inside the conservatory with a lighter. He offers a cigarette saying that everything now belongs to his dad. It’s a happy day for him, and he smokes inside Madam Ju’s garden. The demon joins, specifying he’s someone close to her, not an ex-boyfriend or her current boyfriend. They sip wine together. The greenhouse was a place Madame Ju used to hide whenever she felt down. They were discussing the meaning of black clothes and he turns her clothes white so that Madam Ju can recognize her out of all the people wearing black. A butterfly appears on her hands and flies onto a flower. Do Hee thanks Madame Ju for finding her 17 years ago and at that moment. We can perceive here that Do Hee is imagining the butterfly to be her beloved protector.
In another moment of this never-ending day, we get to find the results of the autopsy. Somehow she ended up taking diclofenac thinking she was taking ibuprofen. The old lady was allergic to diclofenac and someone knowing this must have put diclofenac inside her ibuprofen capsules bottle. Madam Ju must have found something, and someone wanted to hide it. They all want to keep it a secret. She feels out of breath while the others all go out to keep up with appearances. Do Hee disregarding business follows them and speaks out saying that Madam Ju was murdered thinking that she will find the killer from their faces. As a real bodyguard, the demon went next to her to defend her.
The next scene takes us to the reading of their will. Everything is given to a welfare foundation. The group will be given to Do Do Hee but she must marry within a year. So basically, Do Do Hee is the new chairwoman. The chairwoman left a letter for everyone asshe expected everyone to be shocked. We didn’t get to see all the letters but one of them just started with, “Money ruined you all.” Do Do Hee doesn’t understand Madame Ju’s decision. The notary gives her the letter. The others expect her to refuse what the chairwoman left her but she left warning them that the only way to stop her is to kill her.
No matter what, Do Hee promises herself to find the truth. As she was going out, she looked at Guwon who was very helpful during that difficult day and asked him to marry her giving him the extra ring from her finger. What will Guwon answer?
