Episode 2: “Everyone has a demon in his heart”
Guwon is still in shock. “What are you?” Bubbles surround them, and there’s an arch of water. “What have you done to me?” She loses her senses. The cross shifted onto her wrist when she tried to save him, but then had to let him go. He wakes up, grabs her arm, and she finds herself in the hospital, thinking it was a nightmare. He’s by her bedside, acting like a good guy in front of her assistant. “Now they’d think we’re dating.” She can’t slap him while he has her wrists but then hits him hard, leaving an impressive mark on his face. We then see him attend another expiring contract “gig” but find himself surrounded by athletic people that he can’t possibly win alone without magic. Though he fights, they don’t disappear like usual, and more are coming. Instead, he opts to run away and jumps out the window onto a pile of trash.
Her assistant thinks it’s fate that brought them together on the blind date and also on the night she was attacked. She finds it strange he wanted to make a deal while she was getting killed. She remembers her assailant and what he told her: “Ju Cheok Sun is the reason why you’re going to get killed.” He removes a mask, revealing his face, and seems to have a liking for her. Now we can also see that the blood on the culprit’s neck seems to be a skin condition and he cannot get rid of that blood mark on his neck.
Madam Ju is pushing to marry her nephew and after a short chat the nephew, Do Hee and her assistant go for a drive. Do Hee now feels she owes something to the demon and admits that he was the guy that she went on a date with. The nephew driving the car braked suddenly upon hearing this and Ms. Shin (the assistant) finished up with a nosebleed. He’s surprised that she wants to get married. On a different note, I think that Ms. Shin is a very interesting character and seems to be hiding some things.
We get to know a little more about Do Hee. Her father was an engineer, and her mother was a hair salon owner. Chairwoman Ju co-founded Mirae Electronics with Do Hee’s father. Her past relationships didn’t last long because she was too busy and she has never been dumped! Somehow this phrase seems to give us a hint that the demon will be the first one to dump her. What do you think?
Meanwhile, Guwon tries to document himself by checking the demon book. Since he lost his power, he’s going to bewitch humans, and it’s his special superpower and he’s good at it. That’s his plan.
We shift to Madam Ju’s daughter Su Ahn, the CEO of Mirae Apparel, trying clothes. The woman is super excited at learning that Do Hee must be losing money. But then we see that Do Hee wearing the same dress on a sofa and drinking tea in the same shop. A man seems to be trying to eavesdrop on their conversation. Do Hee went there to attack the woman and blackmail her, exposing her personal life, and showing a photo of her cheating on her husband.
Do Hee receives an unexpected phone call from Gu Won. Now, he wants to meet her since his livelihood is being affected. “I’m the one running out of time,” he exclaims. Do-Hee still has something to say to Su Ahn. She ends the conversation with her nemesis, asking her to clean up the mess she made unless she wants the unwanted truth exposed.
Madame Ju reminisces about a bomb explosion and being thrown in the air. Nevertheless, we’ll hopefully get to know more about this in future episodes as now this flashback seems a part of a big jigsaw puzzle with nothing yet in place.
Guwon’s butler (aka ex-fisherman) reminisces about the second time he fell for Mr Demon. At first, he thought it was Jesus, and when he was about to sign his second deal ( a.k.a Soul Sales Agreement), he reminisced about his first life. “You damn devil. Do you know what I’ve been through?” The butler comically beats him. The dancer tricks the butler, and tactfully gets to Guwon’s tattoo now belongs to Do Hee.
Thanks to the romantic OST we now switch to what it seems to be a romantic encounter between our two main characters. She sees him from behind the fountain as the music accompanies the whole scene. He switches off her phone call and looks like he’s glowing with health. “Only you can solve my problems.” He seems to be using his “human bewitching” superpowers to get her to think he’s fallen for her. While driving her to an unknown place she has all kinds of thoughts. She makes it clear that she came to help him recover and that this is not a date. He takes her hand and she shows him the rings but all he is interested in is her or rather his tattoo. He drives fast, holding her wrist, as if by keeping her wrist he could use his old powers. He went with her into another “soul taking gig” where he met again with those athletic guys. This time he remained in the car pretending to shoot with his hands and this guy fell to the ground and died. Another contract burnt – another soul has been taken and another clock dissipates.
He takes her to a drive-in where we see cars shaking indicating that’s a place where they could have an intimate moment together. “Let’s try something here,” he proposes and she assumes that some “action” would follow. Then he quickly asks her to go out and she’s like “We’re doing it outside?” She also starts bantering about public indecency, but his excuse is to take a stroll to the river. This funny banter ends when he asks her to hold her breath for a while and while she is thinking of a kiss, unexpectedly he jumps with her in the river. He intended to try and get his cross tattoo back making me remember a similar scene from the Chinese Drama “Love Between Fairy and Devil”, where they exchange a kiss and their bodies exchange souls. They go up the river, but nothing, the tattoo remains on her wrist. She’s angry he tried to drown her while he’s frustrated cause he has no idea of how he’s going to get his powers back. His butler, who was spying there, got the money she threw at his face, saying that she now owes him nothing.
She gets a cab and goes back home, obviously shaken by these last days. We see the previous assailant put something into a locker, and someone reclaims the package. A guy looked at her family’s photo repeatedly but I couldn’t recognize the character. In a different scene, we see the demon fan dancer looking at Do Hee’s photos while grabbing a spade.
In the end, we see the assailant shooting, and a guy suffering burns on his hands but not sure how these two scenes are related. Su Ah is trying to get the article unpublished. The assailant, always with the blood on his neck, removes his tie looking mysterious and having a double life. In the final scene Do Hee stops in the middle of the road reading the news of the death of the guy who phoned her when someone throws acid at her…
To be continue in Episode 3…
